Executive Summary In order to better understand the Canadian labor market as a whole, Monster reviewed key economic data, online recruitment tendencies and survey data from 250 employers. Survey data provided insight into how these employers perceive the current and future job market. Such an understanding of the labor market can enable hiring managers and human resources professionals to develop more efficient recruitment and retention strategies.
THE CANADIAN EMPLOYMENT MARKET In Canada, employment grew 2.2% in 2007, far surpassing that of the United States, and representing the fifteenth consecutive year of job growth in Canada. The national unemployment rate in Canada was 5.9% at the end of the year, decreasing slightly from its 30-year low of 6.1% at the end of 20061. The historically low unemployment rate along with sustained high turnover in a number of industries promises to ratchet up tightness in labor markets and increase recruiting needs for workers across Canada.
