Executive Summary In order to better understand the labor market as a whole, Monster reviewed key economic data, online recruitment tendencies and key employment trends in the marketplace, and survey data from 400 employers and 700 employees. Survey data provided insight into how these employers and employees perceive the current and future job market. Such an understanding of the labor market can enable hiring managers and human resources professionals to develop more efficient recruitment and retention strategies.
THE U.S. EMPLOYMENT MARKET While the labor market in the United States began to ease in 2007, the national unemployment rate nonetheless stood at the theoretical “full employment” fi gure of 5% at the end of the year. Despite lower business expansion in 2007, the historically low unemployment rate along with sustained high turnover in a number of industries promises to ratchet up tightness in labor markets and increase demand for workers across the country.
